This is the quote I have to keep reminding myself of when the word “mother” (usually in any one of its many variations) is on the lips of my children because somehow, when I am in the house with them, they require my constant attention.
Mommy look at this! Mommy can I have a snack? Mommy can we do this? Mommy watch this! Mommy mommy mommy mommy mommy.
One day, they’ll be teenagers and they aren’t going to want me around, right? This too, is what I remind myself when I make myself comfortable with a good book or at my computer, only to be summoned ten minutes later.
When Daddy’s home, they happily play without ever troubling him. If he’s not careful, he might forget they are there. But when I am home, they need to constantly confirm their presence with me.
Sometimes, it drives me nuts to be so in demand.
My husband used to think it was because I spoiled them and responded immediately to their every whim, but he knows better now. I’ve chatted with other parents about this. I’ve glanced at the parenting magazine articles. I know what it all means. I understand the psychology. Now my husband’s concluded that they just love me.
And every now and then, they beck and call me just to tell me that and give me a big hug… ❤
